Research on locations
My carefully chosen locations are Barbican center, Regent's Park, a group members balcony and St James' Park. All of these locations have no problems with us filming there and we do not have to request permission to film there. Barbican center is very bland and gray while having very good water features and glass buildings so should make a good location. At Regent's Park we are planning to film on a band stand with greenery as our backdrop as well as a section in front of flowers. The group member's balcony is a good location and has greenery as the backdrop as well as flats. Our final location at St James' Park will be conducted in front of a dragon statue. All our locations are very different and so helps to emphasize the effect we are trying to create.
Conventions of Indie music
There are some very common aspects of Indie music videos here are a few:
I am going to try and make sure I include as many aspects as possible from this list in my music video.
- Commonly black and white
- Artist and band frequently shown throughout the video
- Common usage of extreme close ups and long shots
- Dark locations
- Fast paced cuts
- Some but not many special effects
I am going to try and make sure I include as many aspects as possible from this list in my music video.
Video that illustrates my ideas
I was watching Tv and this Next advert came on, I was surprised at the similarities between this advert and my idea for my music video. They change costume and mise en scene throughout and also hold a shot for the whole advert which are both main parts of my music video idea. The differences are that our music video will speed up and slow down a lot to stay in line with the tempo of the music. Also I want to contrast the backgrounds with the costume throughout and this advert doesn't contain these aspects.

Production // Photos From Filming Day Three (Part Two)
Our third filming day went a lot smoother than we thought it would, and we ended up having half the day left SO we decided we would try to find a forth location. We did.
The boys wore tracksuits this time.

Tuesday, 25th October we met for our third filming session. We went to Barbican Center and found mini-fountain with statues of Dolphins so we decided to film there.
The fact that the boys wore pyjamas fitted with the fact that where we were filming was quite a nice looking part of the estate.

Production // Photos From Filming Day Two
Today, we went to Regent's park as our second filming location. We found a band-stand and a flowery area for filming.
Luckily, the weather was warm and the sun was out, which made our shots 10x better and filming more enjoyable.
Production // Photos From Filming Day One
Thursday, 20th October was our first filming day. We filmed on Fuzail's balcony and had a real sense of how our music video is going to look. We gained a few ideas of the positions we wanted the camera and the shots of Jem and Zak, our artists.

A couple of shots showing Zak in different positions.
Just a couple of photos from when Fuzail filmed close ups of Jem and Zak.
Planning // Production Schedule
<-- This is our original production schedule.
We had to change one day of filming because of college commitments and it was too late to obtain permission to film at Canary Wharf, so we cut that location.
So, here is our new production schedule. -->

Planning: Storyboard
This is the first part of our story board, our music video will begin like this and carry on in a similar manner with a lot of cuts to close ups of the lead singer and guitarist. The backgrounds will be constantly changing.
Our band profile
This is Two door cinema club the band whose song we will be using. They are an indie rock band from Ireland who are signed to the French record label Kitsune Music. They won the Choice Music Prize for Irish album of the year in 2010 with their album 'Tourist History' and have three members Alex Trimble, Kevin Baird and Sam Halliday. Many of their songs have been used in adverts, on TV shows and video games, the song we chose 'Undercover Martyn' has been used on both video games and for a campaign.
Analysis of the original music video
Our video will differ from the original in many ways:
- We have two members in our band and have a women in our video unlike the original which has three members and no women
- This video has people holding them up, spinning them around and holding up cards we are doing none of this
- This video has a minimal amount of cuts but our wil have many
- The background is fixed in this video and the costumes are the same throughout whereas ours will vary in many ways
- Every single part of our video will be different from the original
Planning // Resemblances to Other Music Videos (Part One)
Our original idea consisted of having three people starring in our video. We have the idea of splitting the background between all three members of the band and moulding them together as one.
This is a screen shot taken from the music video of 'A Little Piece of Heaven' by Avenged Sevenfold.
Each of the skeletons have their own background and the shots have been placed together to make a whole frame. However, the actual skeletons overlap each individual frame.
Final song choice
Our choice for our final song was 'Undercover Martyn' by two door cinema club. We chose this song as we feel it is more suitable than any other song to our idea or fast cuts as this song is very fast paced to match the cuts. Also we feel the change of the tempo towards the end of the song gives us a chance to include another motif.

Research for music video: State of the music industry
To sum it up, the music industy is in a terrible state. There is no two ways about it, the music industry is dying and it is down to the digital media being so easly avaliable for free online. Piracy is thriving, people do not need to go out and pay £9.99 for an album anymore, you can just illegally download it at home for free in a matter of seconds.

Favourite previous student video
In class we looked at some previous student videos and were told of the grades and a very common fact about the different groups was that the more time and effort put in the better the grade. Most of the student videos we viewed were unrestricted unlike ours they were allowed to have an artist from any country.
This was my favourite music video due to the realistic and believable feel to the video and song. Also the different locations and the cuts to the 'book of rhymes' when he mentions it which is a god illustration and narrative. This video would be aimed at young people mostly black due to the hip-hop genre. The attire of the student representing the artist was perfect and made me feel I need to make sure the mise en scene in my video is perfect. The key thing I have taken from this video is to use something iconic and different in this video it is the fish eye lens. The representation and message was strong too as when the lyric 'the world is yours' comes on young people who would usually not be looked at in such a positive light appear.
Final copyright clearance request
Below is my final request for copyright clearance which I sent to info@kitsune.fr this is my final song choice so I needed to send this.

Planning // Requesting Copyright Clearance
I, myself, have not requested permission to use 'Undercover Martyn' but one member of my group did. Here is a screen shot of his email.

Planning // Final Song Choice
After much debate, we decided that we was going to do 'Undercover Martyn' by Two Door Cinema Club. We chose this one because we felt that with this song, we could create the best possible video. We already had a basic idea for our video and we thought with this song, we could adapt our idea best.
Planning // Shortlist of Potential Songs
Whilst researching for our music video, we created a shortlist of songs. Each one, we chose because we liked the songs and because we though we could make a successful video.
These are our choices:
Noah and the Whale - 5 Years Time
As a group, we had already semi-decided that we wanted fast edits. This meant that, for this particular song, we would have to change our idea, as this song is much too slow.
You Me At Six - Kiss and Tell
This was the favourite choice of the group. We felt that, although the pace of the song was almost perfect for us, our 'artist' felt that we would not be able to pull off a convincing performance.
THE MAIN DEBATE
Two Door Cinema Club - Undercover Martyn
Two Door Cinema Club - What You Know
We liked both songs by this band. We felt we could do justice to both songs and that our 'half-thought-out' idea would work for both songs.
Research // Skills Audit
After all the research I conducted at AS, I can positively say that it will help me this year. I've improved a lot since the beginning of AS, as back then I barely knew how much research is involved in the creation of a practical project. I have learnt that research doesn't just mean researching the genre (whether that be movie or music wise), but researching all aspects of the making of them.
These are some of the aspects:
Planning - Two Door Cinema Club Website
Two Door Cinema Club dont have their own official website however they have their own myspace page which promotes their songs. http://www.myspace.com/twodoorcinemaclub/
Theres also a photo, video, stream and shows section where fans can get to know the band better and promote their image as a band. There is also a 'comment' section where fans can get involved with other fans and talk about what ever is on their mind.
Here it shows their latest songs, in order of popularity and allows you to listen to their entire album for free! and also Share the song on Facebook, Twitter or Digg. |
They also have a blog where the bad can give their fans information about upcoming events or past events and also have them get involved. |
