This is what Laura Mulvey said regarding gender representation:
"In a world ordered by sexual imbalance, pleasure in looking has been split between active/male and passive/female. The determining male gaze projects its fantasy onto the female figure which is styled accordingly." - Laura Mulvey, 1992

My interpretation of this is that she belives society today is split into two when it comes to gender representation. You have the males who are seen as more dominant figures who chase the females and look at them in a more sexual way, more as objects than people. Where as the female is not seen to go around chasing after the man, instead they take a more laid back/ passive approach however they dress to impress the males for their attention. So they dress how men want to see them dressed, which is with less clothes on the better.
For example if you look at this video by snoop dog, the whole concept revolves around what the women look like and what they are wearing. You see the camera show close ups of the bums and boobs more than you do of their face, when if you were going to have a conversation with someone, you would look at their face. So by showing close ups of their breasts it connotes that we do not care what these women have to say, instead we just care about how good they look.
Also the women at the end of the video is dressed very provocitivly, and tries to move in a sexual way on a couch. You can hardly imagine this is what she does normally, so this strengthens laura mulveys claims that the women does what the male want. As she is doing it because there are men watching and she is doing it for their amusment.
