Research for Music Video: Andrew Goodwin's Theory

Andrew Goodwin believes that the traditional narrative analyses, using such ideas as Todorov, do not really apply to pop videos. Instead he thinks,
  • Videos often use the singer as a narrator and a character. Which tells us it shouldn't be a narrated story, but something the artists shares with us.
  • That the video shouldent tell us a story, but instead tell us about feelings and emotions, because songs are about feelings and emotions, not a story.
  •  The singer often looks directly at the camera, this is an extension of (music-hall) performance and trying to involve the viewer at home with the performance. Also it doesn't makes us feel like the story's actually happening, but more like they're looking and talking to us.
There are three types of relations between song and the music video:

Illustration: When there is alot of narative to the story and we are told through the video what is going on, and it relates to the lyrics alot.

Amplification: When the lyrics do not relate as literally, but still hold a meaning towards the music video.

Disjuncture: When there is very little relation to the lyrics.
