Andrew Goodwin's theory

Andrew Goodwin's theory suggests the pop videos today cannot be applied to traditional narrative analysis his reasons for the different narrative structures are that pop videos use the singer as a character and narrator, pop videos are built around songs and the singer will often look directly into the camera. Also there are three main types of relations between songs and videos are illustration, amplification and disjuncture. Illustration is where the video tells the story of the lyrics, amplification is where the video does not contradict the lyrics but adds more layers of meanings to them and disjuncture where there is little connection between lyrics and the video.

Here are some examples:

Illustration: More narrative and tells us the story

Amplification: Not as narrative and does not tell the story as much

Disjuncture: There is only a small relation to the lyrics
